A guide to tavernas in Athens: live Greek music, dancers and plate smashing in Plaka, Psiri and Piraeus – what to order and how to choose.
Why a taverna night is a must
Long tables, home cooking, live bouzouki, dancers in traditional costume – and by the end of the night everyone is up dancing.
Plaka, Psiri and Piraeus
Plaka has classic tavernas with musicians and traditional dancers; Psiri is the lively neighbourhood with live music until late; Piraeus has seaside tavernas and unlimited-drinks nights. At weekends there are afternoon sessions too.
Plate smashing
Plate smashing is a Greek tradition of joy and celebration; at some tavernas it's part of the show and Yana will point you to them.
What to order
Start with mezze for the table – tzatziki, Greek salad, dolmades, calamari, saganaki – then moussaka, souvlaki or fresh fish, and finish with Greek coffee or ouzo.
Kosher taverna
For kosher travelers there's a kosher Greek taverna night on Saturday evening with a live band and kosher plate smashing.
